Encounter off the Kola Peninsula by Ronald Wong During the Cold War, the West produced a great deal of publicity material by recording the drama of fighters being scrambled to intercept and escort heavy bombers of the Soviet Air Force as they flew on intelligence gathering missions across the North Sea. The gathering of information itself was the less glamourous role, however, which is why it is perhaps a less well known role of Western Aircraft. Nevertheless it happened and it had its moments of tension and drama, one of which has been captured here by Ronald Wong. This painting, commissioned by the American aircrews involved in this unsung task, shows a Boeing RC-135 of the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing flying out of RAF Mildenhall, skirting the Soviet Northern Border and, for its pains, being 'escorted' by a Sukoi SU-27 that is attempting to dege it just that little further away from Soviet airspace. 750 S/N Prints: Print Size: 28 1/2" x 201/2" Image Size: 21 3/4" x 14 1/4" Price: Sold Out Copyright © 2002 Military Art Gallery |
