"Trophies: Victory at
Tarawa
by Rick Reeves
23 November 1943 - Weary, yet triumphant U.S.
Marines enjoy the spoils of victory following a brutal and harrowing
four day battle for control of the small, yet strategically important
Central Pacific land mass known as the Tarawa Atoll. The bloody
battle for the island of Betio provided Marine planners invaluable information
on amphibious assault against a well entrenched, determined enemy, on
a coral island. The recently developed amphibious tractor (amtrac)
proved it importance in overcoming the coral reefs that surrounded many
of the Central Pacific island archipelagoes, and thus pave the way for
future successful assaults.
