allied convoy in the North Atlantic as it continue to search for marauding German U-Boats. Nicknamed the 'Flying Porcupine' by the Luftwaffe, the Short Sunderland formed the backbone of Coastal Command's long-range patrol units. It gained its nickname during the Norwegian campaign when a lone Sunderland fought off six Ju-88's, shooting one down and forcing another to land. This print has been counter signed by the artist and Flight Lieutenant Ian de Hamel, who flew Sunderlands with Coastal Command during 1944-45. Copyright © 1999 Military Art Gallery |
