The Battle for the Dunkard Church During the Battle of Sharpsburg, September 17th 1862.
Described as the "Death Knell of the Confederacy" (Antietam to the North) was a savage bloodletting for both sides. It is said to be the bloodiest day of the Civil War. Here, confederate General John Bell Hood's Texas Division stand in the line of battle, in the background, Union troops of General John Sedgewick's Division can be seen advancing on the rebel line. Despite holding off the Union advance for 4 hours, the Rebels around Dunkard Church were forced to retreat, losing Sharpsburg to the Union but prepared to fight on for another 2 1/2 years, Bloodied but Unbeaten.
