Time to Head Home
by
William Phillips
An F4-U4 Corsair of VF-791 belonging to The Fighting Rebels, a reserve squadron from Memphis, Tennessee, unleashes its deadly salvo of rockets against a target hidden among the snow-clad mountains of Korea. Mission accomplished, it is time for this fighter to head home. And home for this Corsair is the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Boxer CV-21 stationed off the Korean coast.
The F4-U4, introduced October 31, 1944, was eventually used by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. It was the first of the four-bladed propeller Corsairs, the early models powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-3800-18W engine, later models using a 42W. Armed with six 50-caliber machine guns, the F4-U4 rated as a 451 mph fighter.
