First Solo, Randolph Field, 1931

Roy P. Ward entered the class of July 1931, the first to be conducted at the newly constructed Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. His first solo in a Boeing P-12 on 30 July 1931 marked the beginning of a flying career that included his return to command Randolph Field in 1942. He later was called to command Avenger Field at Sweetwater, Texas, the home of the WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) in conjunction with General H.H. (Hap) Arnold and Director of Women Pilots, Jacqueline Cochran.
