Brandywine

The Battle of the Brandywine on September 11, 1777, saw the unsuccessful attempt of General George Washington's Continental Army to stop Sir William Howe's advance to the American capital at Philadelphia. It was at Brandywine Creek that Howes redcoats were able to engage the Continentals for the first time since the Battles of Trenton and Princeton the previous year. Despite a tactical defeat, the Continental Army held together and successfully withdrew to continue the fight for independence.
