May 27, 1944, the 95th Bomb Group at Horham, England received mission orders FON373. The target was the railyards at Karlsruhe in Germany. The mission consisted of three groups, the 95th BG was to be the low g roup, the 100th BG was to be the middle group, and the 390th BG was to be high group. Col. Jack Beckelman, was the group lead pilot, from the 95th BG. Flying “Piasano,” Beckelman’s B-17G neared the target around noon. The German fighters had stopped their head-on attacks, and the groups knew that they were headed into Flak Time. Heavy flak filled the sky as Col. Beckelman gave the order to drop the smoke marker indicating for their group to drop their payloads. The mission was a complete success. Col. Jack Beckelman received a Distinguished Flying Cross for this mission.
